“What’s THAT? Wait!” “You’re hitting something!” “Is that a tree?!?!” “Oh my God, it’s a basketball hoop!” “Oh no! It’s falling over!” “Jared, stop!”
Kim, Jared, and Jessi, pile out of the RV like the Keystone Cops to the neighbor’s toppled hoop on the curb, desperately lifting, turning, aligning. Hoop’s up! Looks good! Let’s go! “Ok! Jared drive! Drive! Go! Go! Go!!” As Jessi’s Grandma Jean put it, “Well, your exit wasn’t as masterfully done as your entrance, but it sure was entertaining!”
And this is how we entered Wednesday night’s adventure.
With no show booked, Champagne Sunday and Kim Archer decided to find an open mic in Vancouver, landing on one at a place called Brickhouse Bar and Grill. Sign up at 8, show starts at 9, out of 14 artists, we were 10 and 11. As for the other entertainers, pretty standard. Then Kim got up…immediately everything got quiet as she tore into “Don’t Do It”. One guy next to me said, “Wow, that woman has SOUL!” That was followed by someone rounding the corner to exclaim, “She is fantastic!”
Yep. We know.
Basically, we went to this bar to promote our Thursday gig and to try and book a show for our return trip home. Between the standing ovation at the end of the night, 10 cd’s sold between the two of us, and the countless emails to the owner demanding that we be booked there, I’m guessing we secured a gig. The topper on the night was being greeted at 2:00 am by Jessi’s grandma, wearing an Obi Wan Kenobi robe, offering to feed us for the 30th time!
It was a great night. See you tomorrow!
