Jared here: I’ll kick this one off, as I had taken all the pictures. After a relaxing morning in Durango, as we took some time to work on our crossword and come to grips with our boy being away from us, we got some supplies and hit the road just to get out of town. We made it about an hour or so up the road, and stopped off at a little coffee shop in Pagosa Springs called the Root House to get some work done. It’s a bustling vacation town situated in a crook of the San Juan river, and filled with families in swim suits and Summer clothes, toting around their bags of towels, floaties, and sunscreen. From where we sat on the front porch of the coffee shop, we heard the squeals of kids and families floating down the river in their inner tubes on the other side of the bushes on the banks. It was a great soundtrack for us to reflect on our last few days and smile.

Once the coffee shop closed and we had gotten quite a bit of blogging and miscellaneous work done, we got some food at the Mexican restaurant next door, Tequila’s. From up there, we had a view that overlooked the river, and we realized that we were unknowingly across from a beautiful hot springs resort the entire time. We seriously considered a quick dip, but the road was calling. Maybe later.

And Jessi made a new friend, whom the restaurant had lovingly named “Steve”.

With bellies full, and a sense of accomplishment, we once again hit the road. Now I’m driving, so I’ll turn the narration back over to Jessi.

Some outrageous beauty worked wonders soothing the soul and healing our hearts as we put more distance between us and our only son and headed towards Yankton, SD, where three gigs awaited us. We had to pull over at one point to breathe in the air and grab a shot of some of the landscape.

Our little road-worn Amelia, cruising the mountains with the heavy trailer like a true champ. Thankful always for the care and continued maintenance Jared insists on putting into her to keep his family safe on our travels.

Jared continues to blow back my hair with his kisses…

Much to our surprise (and delight) the temperature went from the low 90’s to a balmy 57 degrees!!!! We saw snow on the mountain sides as we drove through them. We finally pulled over and Jared actually shivered as he jumped out to get this picture of a handful of HAIL he found on the side of the road!

Next weather phenomenon to pass through was the FULL rainbow we spied as we pulled through one of several small towns scattered along the freeway. We felt the luck follow us as we passed through the colorful arch and landed safely for the night at a clean and well lit rest stop on the outskirts of Colorado City, about an hour outside of Pueblo, CO, our morning destination for coffee and WiFi.

Well it is a REALLY good thing we passed under that full rainbow because we found ourselves in a situation the next day where we really needed some luck…
